Damon James Turnbull Fielding: Trial date set for dangerous driving charge after death of cyclist Steve Jelfs

The man charged over the fatal accident that killed Copacabana cyclist Steve Jelfs will face trial in November 2023.

Damon James Turnbull Fielding, of Wyoming, appeared before Gosford District Court on Thursday where he was arraigned on one charge of dangerous driving occasioning death before Judge Tanya Bright.

The 30-year-old sat in the dock and entered a plea of not guilty to the charge as Steve Jelfs’s family watched on.

The matter was set down for trial on November 20 2023 at Gosford District Court. The court heard the trial was expected to last between five to 10 days.

Charge sheets tendered to the court state that on September 17 2021 between 2.30pm 2.35pm Mr Turnbull Fielding was allegedly driving a vehicle when it impacted with Mr Jelfs who was cycling on Empire Bay Dr. They further allege he was driving in a dangerous manner.

Just after 2.30pm, emergency services were called to Empire Bay Dr following reports a cyclist travelling northbound had been hit by a passing car.

Police commenced CPR on Mr Jelfs, 68, before the arrival of NSW Ambulance however he died at the scene.

Mr Turnbull Fielding, aged 29 at the time, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing before being arrested and taken to Gosford Police Station where he was charged.

Mr Jelfs was remembered as a family man and active member of the community, being treasurer of the Five Lands Walk committee and long-term member of Avoca Surf Life Saving Club and Avoca Rugby Club.
