A member of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) and his son have faced court today charged as part of investigations into the murder of Clint Starkey on the Central Coast two years ago.

Just after midnight on Thursday April 6 2017, Clint Starkey, aged 42, presented at Gosford Hospital with serious head injuries.

He was later flown to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition until he died on Monday June 12, 2017.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, assisted by Brisbane Water Police District, established Strike Force Bartondale to investigate the assault and circumstances surrounding Mr Starkey’s death.

Their inquiries revealed he was assaulted at a service station at Peats Ridge, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

During the investigation, strike force investigators charged seven men over their alleged roles. They remain before the courts.

About 2.45pm yesterday police arrested James Crane, 54, and his son Aaron, 25, during a vehicle stop on The Ridgeway at Lisarow, before both men were taken to Gosford Police Station.

The father, who is a member of the Rebels OMCG, was charged with murder.

His son was charged with hindering an investigation into a serious indictable offence and tampering with evidence with the intent of misleading a judicial tribunal.

James Crane did not apply for bail and it was formally refused for him to reappear at court on June 28.

His son Aaron Crane did apply for bail with his Legal Aid solicitor Ian Le Breton telling the court any risk of further offending could be mitigated by stringent conditions he live with his girlfriend at Kincumber, report to Gosford police daily and surrender $5000 in surety.

The police prosecutor opposed bail telling the court Aaron Crane was a flight risk and had associations with the Rebels OMCG.

The court heard when he and his father were pulled over and his dad arrested for the murder of Mr Starkey, Aaron Crane was asked to hand over his dad’s mobile phone, which he had in a satchel.

Reading from a set of police facts Magistrate Ron Maiden said Aaron Cane initially went to hand over the Apple iPhone before twisting it in his hand and throwing it hard onto the ground causing “severe damage to the handset rendering it inoperable”.

Mr Maiden granted Aaron Crane bail on a further condition that he have no contact with his father or anyone else associated with the Rebels OMCG.

Investigations under Strike Force Bartondale continue.
