The Central Coast community is rallying behind a beloved father of three who suffered a cardiac arrest episode last week which has left him with a devastating brain injury.
Matty Cooper, a well-known Central Coast businessman involved in the local rugby league scene, collapsed at home in a medical emergency that has turned his family’s life upside down.
Close family friend Bridget Arahill, speaking with the family’s permission, told the Daily Telegraph that Matty suffered a medical episode last weekend after watching his beloved Wests Tigers play.
“He’s not really out of danger yet, he’s still in ICU and has a big fight ahead over the next few weeks,” she said.
“His body is trying to function again, but it’s not working the way it used to because of the severity of his brain injury.”
Ms Arahill described the family as incredibly kind, forgiving and generous and said Matty’s children are his whole world.
“He’s someone who’s always there for his mates and always there for his family,” she said.
“No matter how tough things get, he’s the first one to show up.”
A GoFundMe campaign launched two days ago has already raised more than $50,000.
“I think that says a lot about Matt, he’s such a huge part of the community and always has been.
“He’s the kind of person who’ll always chip in to support others, especially when it comes to fundraising. He really lives by his word.
“He would do anything for his kids. People love him for who he is, and they’re proud to know him. He’s touched so many people’s lives in so many different ways.
“We just need as much help as we can get, the reality is, he may never be the same again. Any support through the GoFundMe is incredible.”
Ms Arahill said Matty and his family were active, healthy people whose lives revolve around their kids.
“I just feel blessed to know him.”
