Proposal to convert long-abandoned Calga garage into cafe, recharge station
Like a storyline from the hit children’s movie Cars, this long-abandoned 1940s Calga garage on the old Pacific Hwy could get an ultra-modern new lease on life as a Tesla charging station.

It was once a bustling, busy garage on the Old Pacific Highway in Calga … until the freeway was built.
Like a scene from the children’s movie Cars, business stopped for the 1940s garage on the corner of Peats Ridge Rd South and Pacific Highway and it eventually closed.
However, hope is not lost for the run down building with a development application before Central Coast Council to transform it into a cafe, shop and Tesla charging station.
The plans, lodged by owners Lido Potts Point Pty Ltd, seek to upgrade the existing run down garage and establish a “destination” point for road trippers.
The old garage used to service traffic back in the day when the only northern route was via the Pacific Highway through Calga. It eventually closed when the expressway was built.
The old Pacific Highway has since become a popular tourist drive for cyclists, motorcyclists and hobby cars.
In an application to the council, the owners indicate their wish to breathe life back into the site while also retaining and upgrading some of the original features, including the Art Deco facade.
“The proposal is intended as a destination for day trippers travelling on the old Pacific Highway between Sydney and Gosford,” it said.
The Tesla recharging facility is to pay homage to the original use of the site, while also catering for the increasing number of electronic cars.
The DA includes construction of a new kitchen, with the existing building to run as a cafe. There will be an extension at the rear for a covered outdoor area, while new amenities are proposed on the southern side of the site.
The report states the cafe would cater for a capacity of 30, and run seven days a week from 6am to 9pm and 8pm on Sundays. There will be three staff members on site.
