Reports Big W Erina will close have been shut down by the Woolworths Group.
An article indicating Erina would be one of the 30 stores to close was shared across community social media channels at the weekend.
However, a spokeswoman from the Woolworths Group said the report listing 30 stores for closure was “untrue” and an announcement had not been made about the Erina store.
The article has since been taken down.
Last month, the Woolworths Group confirmed the first three stores to close in January 2020 would be Chullora, Auburn and Fairfield.
The Woolworths Group announced it would close 30 stores in the next three years back in April.
The closures, including two distribution centres, represents 16 per cent of stores across Australia.
At the time, the Woolworths Group chief executive officer Brad Banducci said employees would be offered alternate options where possible.
“We understand the impact that the store and distribution centre closures will have on our team and will endeavour to provide affected team members with alternative employment options within the Woolworths Group where possible,” he said.
“This decision will lead to a more robust and sustainable store and DC network that better reflects the rapidly changing retail environment. It will accelerate our turnaround plan through a more profitable store network, simplifying current business processes, improving stock flow and lowering inventory.”
A Woolworths Group spokesman said “we will inform our team members, customers and community stakeholders well in advance of changes to any specific store”.
