Landscaper James “Jamie” Douglas Olsson thought he pretty hot stuff when he was secretly filming himself having sex with “beautiful women” including a prostitute.
But a District Judge has been left far from impressed with the 45-year-old grandfather, describing him as an “unimpressive, arrogant witness” who showed little insight or remorse into his “manipulating” and premeditated offending.
Olsson, the father of a prominent local professional surfer, pleaded guilty to four counts of filming women he had sex with and two counts of distributing an intimate image without consent.
He faced Gosford District Court on Wednesday where Judge David Wilson indicated, in the strongest terms, that he was considering sentencing him to full-time custody.
However Judge Wilson said Olsson lacked insight and trivialised his offending particularly in relation to two instances where he “downplayed” his offences to one of his victims and a security guard at the Terrigal Hotel when he was asked to leave due to a court order.
Olsson’s solicitor, leading criminal lawyer Samar Singh-Panwar, said his client’s remorse had evolved over time.
“That was shortly after the plea of guilty, yes, but it was prior to him really obtaining any meaningful treatment,” Mr Singh-Panwar said. “This is not a simple issue, clearly he has been diagnosed with a paraphilic type disorder.
“He accepts, and he has given sworn evidence, that his behaviour was not consensual.”
Judge Wilson said Olsson “seems to adopt another position when he’s not in court”, one that indicates he was not at fault.
Mr Singh-Panwar said Olsson adhered to his plea of guilty, has sought treatment and he admits that he was manipulative during the offending “to the effect that he was selfish and self absorbed”.
“The best evidence of it is his own evidence,” he said.
Judge Wilson said “I don’t accept his evidence … I can certainly accept that he is manipulative” before indicating that Olsson’s sentence was “close to full time imprisonment” to reduce the risk of reoffending.
“This is recurring, planned, premeditated conduct by a sexual predator in the community,” he said.
Mr Singh-Panwar accepted that a sentence of imprisonment was warranted however requested it be served through an Intensive Corrections Order (ICO), which is the equivalent of a jail term served in the community, to address Olsson’s need for rehabilitation.
Judge Wilson convicted Olsson of the offences but found “special circumstances based upon his obvious need for treatment”.
He did not hand down a formal sentence, however outlined his intentions to sentence Olsson to three years imprisonment to be served by an ICO, to include six months of home detention, along with a $4000 fine.
He said conditions would include seeking treatment, abstaining from drugs for three years, abstaining from alcohol for 12 months and 300 hours of community service.
Judge Wilson said he would also order the phones seized by police be destroyed and the offender delete all his stored videos and images of the four victims.
He has ordered a sentence assessment report, which will determine if Olsson is suitable for home detention, and will hand down his formal sentence on December 13, 2022.
