Avoca: James Douglas Olsson pleads guilty to filming women during sex

A double-timing love rat has pleaded guilty to secretly filming women he had sex with, including a prostitute, until one of his victims found his phone and went “psycho jealous”, a court heard.

Hidden camera deviant James Olsson fronts court

James Douglas Olsson had no issue hiding his mobile phone in coffee cups or on bookshelves to film unsuspecting women he had sex with at his Avoca Beach home.

But the 45-year-old ducked and covered when the camera was turned on him as he left Gosford Local Court on Friday after pleading guilty to two counts of distributing an intimate image without consent and four counts of filming women he had sex with.

Wearing a suit and grey tie Olsson stood quietly as his criminal lawyer Samar Singh-Panwar entered pleas of guilty to each offence.

A further seven charges of filming a person in a private act, recording an image without consent and attempting to pervert the course of justice were withdrawn and dismissed.

Olsson was adjourned to face Gosford District Court on June 24 to set a date for his sentencing.

However any bravado he had when filming women without their knowledge during intercourse quickly evaporated as he left court on Friday where he cowered and hid behind his lawyer’s umbrella.

An agreed set of police facts states Olsson began intimate relationships with two separate women in March last year and filmed himself having sex with them at his house on The Round Drive.

Around the same time Olsson also visited the La Petite Aroma Escort Agency at Chatswood on April 28 last year where he “appeared to conceal the mobile phone amongst clothing on a chair nearby the bed while [a prostitute] had her back to the camera”.

The pair engaged in a number of sexual acts and at no stage did the escort agree to being videoed and “was totally unaware she had been recorded”.

One of the women never knew she had been recorded until police showed two videos of herself and Olsson having sex.

The facts state she told police one time after having sex with Olsson, he said “I just filmed that” to which she replied “no you didn’t”.

“[The victim] stated she believed the offender was joking as she did not see a camera nor was she ever shown a video of the activity,” the facts state.

“[She] recalled the incident as the offender requested that she turn and look outside the window shortly before the commencement of the video footage.”

Olsson came undone after he fell asleep after having sex with one woman who discovered his mobile phone protruding from a coffee cup as she walked to the bathroom.

She picked up the phone and saw it had been recording for two hours and 15 minutes.

She watched part of the video and “saw other similar videos on the phone” the facts state.

The woman, 23, confronted him about it and Olsson said initially said she had given him permission but then stated “well, you didn’t say no”.

The day after police raided his home on May 20, 2021, Olsson contacted another woman, who he had also filmed without her permission, and asked to meet up in the Avoca Beach car park.

“Remember those photos of us having sex?” Olsson asked the woman.

“Well basically I have been sleeping with this girl for the past couple of months and she went through my phone when I was asleep and found videos of me having sex along with a lot of other girls. That made her go psycho jealous even though I told her it was only a casual thing. She has gone to the police about it saying it wasn’t consensual even though it was.”

The woman asked if he had sought permission and he indicated he hadn’t on each occasion.

“Well yeah, that’s what consent is. Remember when I caught you filming us without permission and how angry and upset it made me?” the woman asked.

Olsson replied” yeah, that’s fair enough”.
