Avoca Beach: James “Jamie” Olsson, 45, sentenced for filming women during sex

A District Court Judge has slammed a deviant, sex pest’s actions as “the most extreme version of the invasion of privacy” for secretly filming women he slept with.

James Douglas “Jamie” Olsson was injecting roids and snorting cocaine when he secretly filmed women he had sex with including a prostitute.

The narcissist had told a court he filmed himself having sex with “beautiful women” as much to fluff his own inflated ego, as it was to sexually gratify himself while watching the footage back.

But the 45-year-old’s deviant behaviour almost left him in jail when he was sentenced at Downing Centre District Court on Tuesday.

Olsson, a grandfather and father to a prominent local professional surfer, pleaded guilty to four counts of filming women he had sex with and two counts of distributing an intimate image without consent.

The court heard Olsson had been assessed as suitable to serve a sentence in the community through home detention and was “contrite” and “regretful” for his actions.

Eww ... who’s a creep. Jamie Olsson was found to have committed an “extreme” invasion of privacy.

During the sentence Judge David Wilson outlined the “profound affect” the offending had on two of Olsson’s victims whose victim impact statements revealed they had issues with trust, paranoia as well as other emotional impacts.

He said one victim felt “degraded” and “robbed of her dignity”.

Judge Wilson said when asked why he didn’t seek consent for the filming, Olsson said “I was becoming more and more selfish and desensitised to sexual acts”.

When asked about his motive, Olsson said “to feed my low self-esteem and ego” and “I would feel gratified that I’d done a good job... that I was able to fulfil my part as a partner in bed”.

Judge Wilson said although he was in two minds on the issue, he accepted Olsson, who has since moved to a small town in north-eastern NSW, had shown remorse and was not a risk to the community.

He convicted Olsson of the charges and sentenced him to a three-year intensive corrections order (ICO) with a condition that he abstain from drugs, continue treatment and serve six months under home detention.

An ICO is considered by the court an equivalent to a jail term but served in the community.

Judge Wilson also ordered Olsson perform 300 hours of community service and fined him $4000.

“It’s the most extreme version of the invasion of privacy of individuals,” he said.

At his sentence hearing last month Judge Wilson described Olsson, a landscaper, as an “unimpressive, arrogant witness” who showed little insight or remorse into his “manipulating” and premeditated offending.

“This is recurring, planned, premeditated conduct by a sexual predator in the community,” he said.

Judge Wilson said Olsson lacked insight and trivialised his offending particularly in relation to two instances where he “downplayed” his offences to one of his victims and a security guard at the Terrigal Hotel when he was asked to leave due to a court order.

The court heard Olsson had “hundreds of videos” on his phone of him having sex with some of up to an estimated 75 sexual partners he had slept with but only recorded four women without their consent using his mobile phone.

An agreed set of facts states Olsson went to great lengths to hide his phone in a coffee cup, bookshelf or among clothing

The facts state Olsson filmed three of the women having sex with him at his Avoca Beach home in April and May last year and also filmed himself having sex with a prostitute at Chatswood.

One of the women only discovered his phone after he fell asleep and she got up to use the bathroom.

She found it propped up in a coffee cup and discovered more videos before contacting police, who later seized his phone and informed at least two other women they too had been filmed.
