Around 9.45am on Sunday, when people were out and about having their morning coffee and families were arriving at the beach, a man entered the Avoca Beach Welcome Mart and threatened the store attendant with a knife.

One local, who did not wish to be named, said the police had taped off the men’s toilet near the shark tower and there was a helicopter searching the area.

“It’s been a real shock for the Avoca Beach community,” he said.

“I have lived here for many years and it’s always been so quiet. It’s a real community that looks out for each other.”
