A childhood walking through the bush and sandstone cliffs of the Central Coast has inspired an architect to design a spectacular award-winning home.

Since growing up in North Avoca, architect Andy Carson has kept busy designing incredible homes all along the east coast of NSW.

His most recent venture, the Headland House, has just taken out the top honour at the 2019 HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards.

“I was lucky enough to grow up in Terrigal and North Avoca. Surfing every day after school and bush walking through the local angophora and sandstone cliffs has inspired my work,” Mr Carson said.

The new home designed by Andy’s firm, Atelier Andy Carson, is a sanctuary from its harsh surrounds, perched on a sprawling coastal site at Werri Beach. Green pastures and paddocks running dairy cows line this 150-acre property on one side, rugged coastal cliffs and ocean on the other.

The spectacular home has even piqued the interest of major international brands like Porsche, Gucci and Mini, which have all used it as a backdrop for campaign shoots.

The four bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom Headland House is connected by three pavilions, wrapped around a protected courtyard.

180-degree views and breathtaking scenery called for a respectful celebration of the location. Instead of providing the same view throughout the house, the design creates considered framed glimpses of what lies outside. Meanwhile, a storm-viewing room pays tribute to the drama of extreme weather fronts creeping up from the ocean.

Andy said his love and respect for the landscape shines through all of his designs.

“The NSW coast is such a special place and I’m honoured to be able to design beautiful homes for people in this spectacular location,” Mr Carson said.
