A 23-year-old who crashed a rental car containing 12kg of cocaine before fleeing the scene in a taxi became involved in a drug enterprise to fuel his drug and gambling addiction, a court has heard.
Alex Green, of Umina, appeared in the Gosford District Court on Friday for a sentencing hearing after pleading guilty to supplying cocaine, possessing a prohibited drug, and failing to stop and assist after an impact.
Green was driving through Wyee on 3 November 2023, carrying a carload of high-octane drugs when he ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle at about 4am.
After the crash, Green fled on foot with two duffel bags.
An agreed set of facts states Green had hired the car and driven it to the Gold Coast before returning the following day.
A 58-year-old man was driving north on the Pacific Highway when he slammed on the brakes but was unable to avoid T-boning Green’s sedan, sending it spinning out of control.
Green got out and tried to open the boot before eventually managing to grab two large duffel bags and walking away. He managed to hide one bag, but the other containing 12kg of cocaine was found by police.
Meanwhile, Green called a taxi to pick him up from Wyee, telling the driver he had run a red light and been in a crash.
He told the driver he had “f--ked up” and was going to “go to jail” as he had left his wallet in the car.
Green’s lawyer told the court his client had a good upbringing but became involved in crime due to drug and gambling debts.
The court heard Green had taken full responsibility for his conduct and participated in the offending because he was a drug addict who had accumulated debts of around $30,000.
His lawyer said Green was merely a “foot soldier” and took part in the offending to settle a drug debt, also receiving methamphetamine and cocaine as a reward.
He submitted that Green’s involvement was brief and that his role in the drug supply operation was at the lower end of the hierarchy.
“He was absolutely inept—had he not run the red light, he might not be before the court,” he said.
Green will be sentenced on 15 August.
