A chilling audio recording has been played in court of the first 14 minutes of a horrifying ordeal in which a woman was hogtied, raped and tortured for 12 and a half hours.

Adam Robert Hall, 50, of Woodberry near Maitland, sat with his head in his hands as the recording was played at Gosford District Court on Thursday.

It had been captured on his victim’s mobile phone just after he “snapped” following an argument about 4pm on February 10 last year.

The court heard the couple met on the dating site Plenty of Fish, in which his profile listed him as an “alpha male, dominant, polyamorous”.

His victim was a professional house sitter and they had been dating for about 14 months when they were staying at a house at MacMasters Beach.

On the recording Hall is heard threatening to break her nose, jaw and kill his victim who he called a “f...ing maggot” as she is heard crying and pleading “no more” and “please Adam give me a chance, I don’t want to die”.

He took her upstairs where he got a knife from the kitchen before pushing her down the stairs.

As she got up he punched her in the face and dragged her into the study where he used the knife to cut an 8cm-long wound to her upper right thigh.

“The offender told the victim that if she did everything she was supposed to, he would leave her tied up and not kill her,” an agreed set of facts read.

Over the next 12 and a half hours, Hall subjected his girlfriend to what District Court Judge Tanya Bright described as “humiliating and degrading sexual acts”.

The court heard he continued the sustained abuse while he watched pornography and on at least two occasions while he filmed her on his mobile phone with her hands tied behind her back.

At one point during the ordeal he dragged her into the garage and got a pair of pliers and a hammer.

He told her if she did not comply with his specific demands he would pull out her teeth with the pliers or break her toes with the hammer.

At 2.24am he bound and gagged her and put her in the back seat under a blanket while he drove to the 7-Eleven at Kincumber to buy cigarettes and a lighter.

“During this period the offender was consuming amyl nitrate by way of ‘sniffs’,” the facts read.

At 4.30am, Hall fell asleep and the victim was able to flee wearing only a grey jumper.

She ran towards the beach until she saw a light on at a nearby house and jumped the fence. She went inside where she encountered a 10-year-old girl who she asked to get her parents.

By the time police arrived her eyes were almost completely shut from swelling.

At 12.45am on February 12, Hall called triple-0 from a pay phone near the Caltex service station at Wamberal and told the operator he wanted to hand himself in.

Police arrived and found him sitting in a gutter.

In a police interview Hall said he discovered she was missing when he woke up so he fled on his motorcycle, passing a police car en route to the house.

He said he spent the day drinking whiskey and smoking cigarettes in some bushland and threw his phone away.

Police found the phone and it contained two videos of the assaults.

He admitted some of the things he did to his victim were for “humiliation”.

“I really don’t know what happened, I just snapped and assaulted, viciously assaulted her. Um, I cut her, I hit her repeatedly. I forced her to perform sexual acts. I threatened her life,” he told police during the interview.

Hall pleaded guilty to eight offences including aggravated sexual intercourse without consent and aggravated sexual intercourse while threatening with a weapon.

He also pleaded guilty to a further seven counts of aggravated sexual intercourse causing actual bodily harm and maliciously damaging property after the homeowner had to have the house “forensically cleaned” from all the blood stains.

Judge Bright sentenced him to 22 years jail with a non-parole period of 16 years and six months.

With time served since his arrest he will be eligible for parole on August 11, 2035, however the court heard he was “concerned he will not survive jail”.

Outside court his victim told NewsLocal she was relieved with the result.

“I can breathe now knowing my family is safe,” she said.
