A Newcastle-bound train carrying about 70 passengers struck a blue Volkswagen polo on the level crossing at Woy Woy, reigniting calls on the government to fix the deadly intersection.

At around 9:00am this morning, a train heading northbound struck a vehicle on the tracks on the Central Coast.

The passing train, which was carrying around 70 passengers, was heading northbound towards Newcastle before it clipped the front of a blue Volkswagen polo stuck on the tracks at the Woy Woy level crossing.

The small vehicle had become trapped under the boom gate at the Woy Woy level crossing prior to the incident.

The 64-year-old female driver of the car was believed to have misjudged the amount of traffic crossing the tracks before the boom gate smashed down on top of her car.

The woman was assessed by paramedics and did not sustain any injuries.

Member for Gosford Liesel Tesch released a statement that said the incident was a “wake-up call” for the NSW Government to deliver on their “decade-long broken promise” to fix Woy Woy Rd including the Rawson Rd level crossing.

“In 2016, the NSW Liberal Government walked away from the commitment due to cost blowouts and disagreements with the former Gosford City Council,” the statement read.

“A decade later, the deadly level-crossing remains in place and the NSW Liberal Government still has no plan to fix this chronically dangerous part of our transport system.”

After the train collided with the front of the vehicle, police allege it continued for another 100 metres before coming to a stop.

The driver of the train also did not report any injuries.

Bus services temporarily replaced train services and the car was removed from the tracks at around 9:30am.

Regular train services recommenced just before lunchtime.
