A witness in a Canberra murder trial has told the court he went to the McDonald’s restaurant across the street from the scene after the defendant told him he had stabbed someone.

A 17-year-old boy is on trial for murder in the ACT Supreme Court after allegedly fatally stabbing an 18-year-old man six times during a brawl at the Weston Creek Skatepark during the early hours of September 27, 2020.

The teenage defendant has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, but pleaded guilty to a charge of recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm after admitting to stabbing the 16-year-old cousin of the deceased man during the fight.

On Thursday’s hearing the witness, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the court after the brawl the defendant said he had stabbed someone during the melee.

The man said after making the alleged admission the boy lifted up his shirt to reveal a knife.

The witness told the court the next thing he remembered was taking an Uber with another man involved in the brawl to Weston Creek McDonald’s, across the road from the Weston Creek skatepark where the fight took place.

“We didn’t believe what he said,” the man said.

The man said he and the other man ate at the fast food chain as they saw police attend the scene.

While giving evidence the man admitted during the fight he pulled out the 18-year-old victim from his car and began to beat him but denied stabbing him.

He also told the court he used a shovel to smash the windscreen of the victim’s car during the fight.

The jury heard the witness had previously been convicted and sentenced for affray, common assault and property damage for his role in the fight.

The trial continues.
