Speed camera locations: Which ACT roads to watch before a costly commute

Speed and red-light cameras raked in more than $30m in fines last year across the ACT — and with new enforcement tech on the way, drivers could be in for an even costlier commute. Here’s a list of speed camera locations across the ACT.

More than 30 fixed and mobile speed cameras monitor some of the ACT’s busiest stretches.

Getting stung by one isn’t a cheap ride, with fines ranging from $297 to $1841 for non-school zones (and often higher in school zones).

Demerit points also apply, ranging from 1 to 6 points depending on the offence.

In 2023 alone, speed and red-light cameras generated more than $30m in fines, according to ACT Budget figures and that number is expected to rise again in 2025 as more mobile units are deployed.

In the past two years, the number of speeding fines issued in Canberra has surged.

A single camera on Hindmarsh Drive at the Yamba Drive intersection issued more than 15,000 tickets last year — making it the ACT’s most lucrative camera.

The government says funds raised from camera fines go into road safety programs, driver education, and infrastructure upgrades — not general revenue.

The ACT Government plans to introduce point-to-point cameras on major arterial roads by late 2025, measuring average speed across long distances — a method widely used in other states but new to Canberra.

The ACT Government state that mobile speed camera vans can be placed at 927 locations.

These locations must meet a range of technical, health and safety criteria including being at least 200m from a change of speed limit.
