Sithu Naing: alleged child rapist released on bail

A man has faced court after being charged with child sex abuse crimes dating back to 2013.

A man has faced the ACT Magistrates Court for the first time charged with child sex abuse charges dating back as far as 2013.

Sithu Naing is charged with two counts of an act of indecency against a child under 16 and sexual intercourse with a child under 16.

His alleged offending relates to two separate complainants who were aged between 10 and 16 at the time.

Mr Naing appeared in court via telephone from the Alexander Maconochie Centre on Monday where he applied for bail

The alleged child rapist did not enter any pleas.

Bail was not opposed by the prosecution and Special Magistrate Margaret Hunter granted bail under strict conditions.

Under those conditions Mr Naing must not approach, contact or threaten the complainants or their families, consume alcohol, or be in the presence of anyone aged under 18 unless supervised by another adult.

He was also ordered to surrender all passports he may have to police by 12pm Tuesday and must not order any new passports.

It is alleged Mr Naing offended between 2013 and 2021.

Members of Mr Naing’s family were in court during the bail hearing including children.

Prior to reading out the charges against the defendant Magistrate Hunter said “a young person is in court, (Mr Naing) is it appropriate to read these charges out.”

“I don’t think it’s appropriate,” Ms Hunter said before ordering the child to be removed from the courtroom.

Mr Naing will face court again on April 4.
