A removalist and amateur rugby player has been granted conditional bail after launching an appeal to get his conviction overturned.

Queanbeyan man Simione Latu, 26, was found guilty of common assault and assault occasioning bodily harm by Magistrate Roger Clisdell following a one-day hearing at Queanbeyan Local Court in July.

Last month, Latu was sentenced to 14 months in jail with a non-parole period of 8 months

During the hearing the court heard Latu was first involved in a fight inside the Campbell and George Pub in May, 2021 where he threw the complainant across the bar.

The court heard following this initial incident Latu bashed the same complainant while he was waiting for an Uber outside the pub.

During the hearing the court heard the complainant had “significant” damage to one of his eyes.

On Monday, a lawyer appearing on Latu’s behalf told the court his client was launching an appeal against his assault convictions.

Mr Clisdell immediately granted Latu bail with the conditions he notifies the court of any change of residence and returns to court when his matter is next heard.

Latu’s appeal will be heard at Queanbeyan District Court on a later date.
