Open pasture near the NSW-ACT border is set to be transformed into a major club as part of $36 million development plans lodged with the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council.
The Vikings Group, which already boasts four clubs in Canberra’s south, is looking to expand interstate with the construction of a venue in the Queanbeyan suburb of Jerrabomberra.
Just 700 metres west of the ACT border, the club would be built in two stages if approved.
The development application states the proposed Vikings Club would be open from 10am to 3am each day, catering for up to 1320 people.
It would include a main building and a pavilion, as well as car parks and an alfresco dining area near a pond.
The site, on Tompsitt Drive, is bordered by farmland on three sides and is currently described as “devoid of any existing buildings or structures”.
Documents lodged by Knight Frank Town Planning as part of the application say the development would meet the social needs of local residents by providing a place for them to gather, while also generating job opportunities through construction and ongoing employment.
The documents also include artist’s impressions of the proposed development, showing views of the site from the street and the area near the pond.
The development application is open for public comment until April 19.
It comes at a time of change for licensed venues in Queanbeyan, with Harvest Hotels set to take over the Jerrabomberra Hotel in mid-April after purchasing the pub for a price reported to be in the region of $25 million.
Plans to upgrade the Queanbeyan Leagues Club on Monaro Street, a busy thoroughfare in the heart of the border city, have also been lodged with the regional council.
The council will receive public comments about that proposal until April 16.
