A Goulburn woman says she is trying to get her life on track after being involved in a brawl involving about seven people on the steps of the regional city’s courthouse.

Lucinda Natasha Lee Little was at a Goulburn District Court matter with family members on July 26 last when violence erupted, prompting court sheriffs and police to intervene.

Facing Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday, the 41-year-old was sentenced for affray, after being convicted in her absence on January 17.

Little was with several family members and others when an argument on the courthouse steps led to a “violent confrontation”, police state in court documents.

Police say a teenager punched Little three times during the incident, which prompted the Goulburn woman to turn and throw a punch back.

Several others became involved – police observed as many as seven people fighting at once.

A woman grabbed Little by the hair and punched her in the head at least four times.

Little and the other woman held onto each other’s hair for about 20 seconds as court sheriffs tried to break them apart.

Three more security personnel attempted to intervene and police were called.

Little’s defence lawyer said the Goulburn woman was at the courthouse as a support person on the day, but accepted she became involved in the chaos.

Her lawyer emphasised Little was punched first and retaliated.

Since the fight, Little has had a stint in rehab and enrolled in TAFE, the court was told.

Magistrate Geraldine Beattie told Little the location of the fight was of particular concern.

“Violence anywhere is inappropriate … violence in the courthouse is even worse,” she said.

The Goulburn magistrate acknowledged emotions were “running high” due to court proceedings on the day, but “things quickly got out of hand”.

Little told the court she was trying to change her life and did not intend to become involved.

She was convicted and sentenced to an eight-month community correction order.
