A Jerrabomberra doctor accused of sexually touching a woman without her consent has been suspended from practising medicine.

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency general database states Deepak Shadilal Puri, 41, has been barred from practising in Australia.

Puri was arrested on March 30 by Queanbeyan police and charged with sexually touching another person without consent and an aggravated charge of sexually touching a person.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A Medical Council of NSW spokeswoman confirmed Mr Puri’s suspension.

The spokeswoman said the council’s investigations and decisions which relate to potential disciplinary action in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal are the responsibility of the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission.

“Only the tribunal has the power to make an order to deregister a doctor in NSW,” the spokeswoman said. “The council cannot make any further public comment at this time.”

A NSW Health Care Complaints Commission spokeswoman noted Mr Puri’s suspension and confirmed the organisation was investigating.

Court documents allege Mr Puri sexually touched a woman without her consent at Braidwood in October. His second charge relates to the same date and place but was aggravated.

According to the AHPRA, Mr Puri was first registered as a doctor in Australia on May 23, 2016.

He has a general and specialist medical registration according to the medical organisation, with both due to expire on August 30, 2023.

The database states Puri achieved his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the Maharashtra University of Sciences in India in 2004.

Mr Puri was awarded his AMC Certificate by the Australian Medical Council in 2017 and was qualified in the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2022.

During his brief mention in Queanbeyan Local Court on Monday, Puri’s pleas were entered and his matters were adjourned to June 19.
