A vision to develop five new townhouses, a childcare centre, and a health centre in one of Canberra’s youngest suburbs has been unveiled.

The development slated for the suburb of Taylor, in the far north of Canberra’s Gungahlin region, has an estimated cost of $18,648,311.

Bounded by Romberg Way, McGlashan St and Karl Langer Cres, the site is located at the far northeast of the suburb which remains largely undeveloped.

The designs, developed by Judd Studio, depict five modern two-storey townhouses all with a gross floor area of 1586sq m.

The childcare centre would cater for 98 children, and would include a 686sq m outdoor play area, including an undercover veranda.

Meanwhile, designs for the health facility include which will be three-storeys high with two levels of underground parking and 10 consultation rooms.

The suburb of Taylor welcomed its first residents in 2020.

Aerial shots of the region from Nearmap depict the extraordinary growth of the suburb between 2010 and 2022.

According to Census 2021 data, 2220 people live in Taylor, with the median age of 30, slightly younger than Canberra’s median age of 35.

Census data states the average household in Taylor has 1.8 children.

Gungahlin Community Council is an volunteer organisation that aims to represent the interests of residents in the region.

President Peter Elford said no one had raised any concerns about the development application to his organisation.

“That said, Taylor is a brand new suburb, and hence attracts a young family demographic for whom health, education, and childcare are top of mind issues,” Mr Elford said.

“So it ticks those boxes.

“To the east of this site (the suburb of) Jacka will shortly be developed, so that will be a source of additional demand for these services as well.

“It‘s scale and appearance look to fit in well with the suburban setting it’s located in.”
