The tragic death of a “kind-hearted” young father has helped save several lives, bringing “a bit of light” to his grieving family.

Joshua Joseph Parlov, a 21-year-old man from the Canberra region, died by suicide last week, shattering a large family that includes his partner, one-year-old son, parents and six siblings.

Mr Parlov’s second cousin, Stephanie Buchanan, told this masthead she had not seen him for a while before his untimely death.

“But he’s always been an extremely kind-hearted person,” she said, describing him as someone inclined to put others before himself.

Ms Buchanan said Mr Parlov had remarkably continued giving to others despite his unexpected passing, having donated his organs.

She said the family had been advised Mr Parlov’s “precious gift” had saved five lives, including that of a little girl.

“Obviously there’s so much grieving going on, but [there’s] just a bit of light knowing he’s helping others,” Ms Buchanan said.

“He will forever help those people now, which is just so him.”

One of the biggest things that has struck Ms Buchanan about the tragedy is how it has brought people together.

She said about 30 people had gathered around Mr Parlov while he was in hospital, and they were only some of the many who cared about the 21-year-old.

This is evidenced by the fact more than 100 people have donated, in only four days, to a GoFundMe campaign Ms Buchanan has set up to help ease financial strain on the family.

The money from the fundraiser will go to Mr Parlov’s parents, Shane and John, to assist with funeral costs and allow the family time to grieve.

At the time of writing, 114 people had donated a combined $7165, helping achieve nearly half of the campaign’s $15,000 goal.

“It’s amazing,” Ms Buchanan, who lives in Canberra’s south, said.

“We are just so overwhelmed already with all the support we’re receiving.”

Those who have contributed include Mr Parlov’s primary school friends, Ms Buchanan said.

“You don’t realise how many people are supporting you from the sidelines and would step in immediately if you needed it,” she said, urging anyone struggling with their mental health to seek help.

“It’s not weak to speak.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the GoFundMe campaign can do so here.
