Bywong crash: Motorist killed in head-on truck collision north of Canberra

The Federal Highway remains closed after a motorist died in a head-on collision with a truck in the NSW Southern Highlands near Bywong, north of Canberra.

A motorist has died after a head-on collision with a truck near Bywong, north of Canberra.

Emergency services were called to the Federal Hwy in the state’s Southern Highlands about 7.20am on Tuesday following reports a “B-double” truck and a Ford Falcon had collided head-on, before the truck swerved and collided with a ute.

The driver of the Ford tragically died at the scene.

The drivers of the truck and the utility vehicle were uninjured and were helping police.

The truck driver will be taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said a fourth person was also treated at the scene, but could not confirm which vehicle they had been in.

Officers from the Monaro Police District attended the scene along with Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Following the crash, officers established a crime scene and will investigate the circumstances around the crash.

As of 9am, the Federal Hwy remained closed in both directions with motorists being urged to avoid the area.

The fatality comes as ACT Police grapple with what has become one of the worst years on record for Canberra region road deaths.

Last month, three people were killed in a crash in Whitlam in Canberra’s west when a hatchback and a van collided.
