ACT Attorney-General and Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury has tabled a bill which would remove gendered language from ACT Legislation.
If passed the bill will update almost 40 pieces of legislation in the territory with gender-neutral language.
This means any references to he, his, him, himself or she, her, hers, herself will be substituted with the gender-neutral singular they, them, their, themself.
Mr Rattenbury said the move to gender neutral language was an important step towards an inclusive and accepting Canberra.
“Language is important and powerful,” he said.
“Many Canberrans are gender diverse, and Canberra is an inclusive and welcoming community.
“It is time that the language of our legislation reflects that.”
Mr Rattenbury said the use of strictly masculine or feminine pronouns in legislation was “no longer appropriate”.
“The use of gender-neutral language in our society is important to reflect and foster an accepting, inclusive, and progressive Canberra community,” he said.
“Using gender-fair and inclusive language also helps reduce gender stereotyping, promotes social change and contributes to achieving gender equality.”
