ACT Government to support Canberra Raiders’ bid for NRL women’s team

Get ready to break out the viking clap — a bid to start a Raiders NRL women’s team has won some heavyweight backing.

The ACT Government is backing the Green Machine and has pledged $13 million to support the Canberra Raiders’ bid for an NRL women’s team.

Acting Chief Minister and Sport and Recreation Minister Yvette Berry said the commitment was the first example of an Australian state or territory government supporting a women’s rugby league team.

“Canberra has a deep commitment to women’s sport and I’m sure there will be a lot of support for a NRLW team in Canberra,” Ms Berry said.

“Not only will it provide inspiration to our community, but it will give local players the option to stay in Canberra and continue their sporting career here.”

The Canberra Raiders are aiming to secure an NRLW team in time for the 2023 season.

Despite not yet having an NRLW team, the nation’s capital will host the Women's’ State of Origin on June 24 at GIO Stadium.

This is the first time NSW and Queensland teams will battle it out on neutral territory since the women’s State of Origin began in 2018.

“Both states have won two Origin matches each, so it’s fitting the fifth game is played at a neutral venue,” NRL chief executive officer Andrew Abdo said.

“Canberrans are passionate rugby league fans and we’re looking forward to giving fans the opportunity to witness the elite women’s game for the very first time.

“It’s a great city and we’re delighted to take new content to the region.”

Canberra Raiders boss Don Furner said hosting the women’s State of Origin would “go a long way to (show) our commitment and passion for the women’s game”.

Meanwhile, the Raiders will kick off their season against the Sharks on Friday.
