Woody Hulst, 28, fronts medical tribunal over ‘silly’ small-time drug dealing to girls he met at pub

A chiropractor who sold his ADHD medication to impress two women he met at a pub has faced a tribunal to determine whether or not he would be deregistered from his profession.

A “silly” former Jindabyne chiropractor who became a small-time drug dealer to impress two women he met at a pub has dodged deregistration.

Dr Woody Hulst in August last year pleaded guilty to three counts of supplying a prohibited drug and was convicted and sentenced in Cooma Local Court to a nine-month good behaviour bond.

Last month, Hulst, 28, now of Coolagolite on the South Coast, was dragged before the New South Wales Civil and Administrative Tribunal, after failing to fully declare his convictions.

Hulst told the tribunal he met two “young women” at a pub in July 2017, who asked whether he could get them MDMA.

Hulst, trying to impress the women, gave them his phone number and unsuccessfully rang around his mates to find the drug.

When one of the women rang him the next day, Hulst said he couldn’t get his hands on the party drug, but agreed to sell them dexamphetamine — also known as Adderall — from his ADHD prescription.

Over three weeks, Hulst sold the women 25 pills from his prescription at $10 a pill.

Hulst told the tribunal he was partly motivated by money, and did not know the women were known to police until he was arrested in September 2017, after which he resigned from Jindabyne Family Chiropractic in a bid to protect his boss from any bad publicity.

Hulst has since been working at a restaurant and at a mate’s sign-writing business.

The tribunal found Hulst “does not constitute a risk either to an individual patient or to the profession at large” and that he “understood the failing in his professional behaviour and that it will not occur again in the future”.

The tribunal found Hulst had shown “contrition and regret for all the problems that he had created as a result of his ‘silly’ behaviour”.

The tribunal spared Hulst from a reprimand, instead issuing him a formal caution and allowing him to keep his registration so long as he sees a psychologist or psychiatrist, and has the guidance of a professional mentor.

Hulst was also ordered to pay $5000 in costs.
