A knife-wielding ex-boyfriend showed up stoned at his former partner’s house, climbed through the kitchen window and grabbed a knife before threatening to kill her in front of their baby, a court has heard.

Jack Elson, 20, faced the ACT Supreme Court on Friday where he was released on an intensive corrections order after eight months behind bars on remand.

Elson, of no fixed address, had previously pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and contravening a court order.

The court heard Elson went around to his ex’s house in February “highly under the influence of cannabis”.

Elson’s former partner was watching TV with their child, when he began yelling at her to open the door.

Elson then tried to life a sliding door off its rollers before climbing through the kitchen window, grabbing a knife and threatening to kill her.

He then began stabbing the couch cushion where she had been sitting.

Meanwhile, Elson’s ex-partner had called her sister for help on Facetime, and she watched the terrifying ordeal unfold on camera.

Elson told a court-ordered report writer he shouldn’t have smoked cannabis before going around to the house.

The drug can make him hallucinate, he said.

Prosecutors argued Elson went to the house to exercise power and control over the woman.

Justice Chrissa Loukas-Karlsson said Elson needed to learn that women and children were not property.

“It is accepted that you understand that now and you have begun the life long process of rehabilitation,” she said.

She said if he continued to be violent around his young son, it would likely lead to another generation of family violence.

“History does not have to repeat itself from one generation to the next with violence,” she said.

“You have to be a better man than you were that night if you want to be a role model to your son.”

She sentenced him to a two year and two-month intensive corrections order.
