In honour of International Burger Day, we asked locals to vote on the best burger in Canberra. It comes as no surprise to their customers to see the winner is cult favourite burger barn Grease Monkey in Braddon.
Grease Monkey has been a firm favourite in the area since it opened its doors in 2015 in Braddon. Manager Dean Ratsch said the location near car yards and mechanic workshops on the industrial street had a strong influence on the eatery.
“Our site was called City Exhaust,” he said.
“This is where we draw a lot of inspiration for our products from and where our theme of being a mechanic inspired burger/pizza shop originated from.”
That shows in the open restaurant and spacious outdoor area with wooden benches, which creates a casual and cosy atmosphere. Despite all the seating, it’s usually packed.
Mr Ratsch said Canberra locals have been very supportive of Grease Monkey since it first opened its doors in Braddon.
“Canberra is a very loyal place and many of our customers have been coming in since the day we opened,” he said.
“To be fair our burgers are pretty addictive.”
Grease Monkey is known for its delicious gluten-free secret sauce and for its creativity when trying new recipes.
One of the standout special burgers is the ‘Fat Elvis’ which they named in honour of one of Elvis’s favourite burgers. It has a beef patty, double cheese, maple bacon, caramelised banana, strawberry jelly and a peanut caramel sauce. Keep a doctor nearby.
Mr Ratsch said their willingness to be innovative is what sets Grease Monkey apart from the crowd of burger joints.
“We are always trying new things to improve the business – new products, burger specials and a real personality in our brand communicated through social and our staff every day,” he said.
“I also just think the burgers are damn tasty!”
Mr Ratsch said he also thinks the success of Grease Monkey comes from the fun environment the staff create by being “one big happy family” who are excited to be at work.
“Customers can see the love the staff have for the venue,” he said.
That love has certainly been reciprocated with Grease Monkey’s outpouring of support for the best burger in Canberra.
