Canberra’s best takeaway restaurants revealed: burgers, pizza and Turkish
With the potential for another round of lockdown looming, it’s important to be prepared — we’ve put in the hard yards and come up with a definitive list of Canberra’s best takeaway joints
Canberra Star
Don't miss out on the headlines from Canberra Star. Followed categories will be added to My News.
The ACT is the only place on the mainland with no active COVID-19 cases, but with Melbourne in lockdown and Sydney’s second wave gradually getting worse, Canberrans could soon find themselves stuck at home in a bid to fight the spread of the virus.
While we’re hoping pubs and restaurants keep trading, we’ve put together a list of some of Canberra’s top takeaway joints.
Tell us what you think and add your favourite.
Brodburger
More than a decade ago, Sascha Brodbeck started selling burgers from a caravan by the lake.
The rest is history.
No list of Canberra’s best takeaway joints would be complete without mentioning this institution.
For our money, the double cheeseburger, with lashings of American mustard, is the best thing on the menu, but the classic Brodburger is a crowd favourite.
They’ll even twist your arm and sell you some takeaway beers.
Three locations: Kingston glassworks, Capital Brewing Co, Fyshwick and corner of Northbourne Ave and Morphett St, Dickson.
Grease Monkey
This Lonsdale St favourite lives up to its name — don’t expect much in the way of healthy options.
During the last round of restrictions, there were big crowds standing on the corner, waiting in the cold for their big fat paper bags full of big fat burgers and chips.
They do pizzas too, but the burgers are where it’s at.
This is where you come if you’re in the mood for an artery-busting, diet-destroying dinner.
We’re told even the vegan burger is “really good”, by someone who is into that sort of thing.

Turkish Halal Pide House Yarralumla
Yarralumla Kebab shop, as most people know it, is an oasis in a takeaway desert.
It is one of two places on the south side of the lake that makes it onto our list, but is worth going out of your way for no matter where you live.
You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but the best bet is to get a few mates together and tuck into a banquet.
The chicken kebab is special, the snack packs the second best in Canberra.
47 Novar Street, Yarralumla
Zehni’s Turkish Kitchen
Hands down, without a doubt, Zehni’s does Canberra’s best halal snack pack.
Sure, it’s a bit of a trek out to Gungahlin (well, unless you are from Gungahlin) but Zehni’s is worth driving north of the dump for.
There is something really quite special about the combination of chips, meat and sauce, when done just right.
They also have a great looking menu of things which aren’t halal snack packs, but (full disclosure) we just get the halal snack pack every time.

Mama Dough
You’re pretty spoiled for choices when it comes to overly fancy food at Ainslie shops.
There’s an IGA with a famous cheese aisle, a great new bakery, the crepe place, and then there’s Mama Dough.
This isn’t Dominos.
This is the real deal, gourmet meats, handmade bases, fancy cheeses, and flavour for days.
Order more than you think you’ll need and eat the leftovers for breakfast.
If you’re lost looking at the menu, try the pumpkin cream margherita or — from the “unusuals” menu section, the sausage and chill oil. Thank us later.

Trecento
Trecento, we presume, is Italian for real fancy.
Trecento’s dining room has been shut for a while now, but they’ve been doing a brisk trade in deliveries and takeaways.
If you’re feeling adventurous, give the pistachio pizza a whirl.
Trecento probably has the edge on Mama Dough for best pizza in Canberra, but it’s a close-run thing. If we go into lockdown, do yourself a favour and try both.
The frutti di mare linguine — squid, prawns and swordfish — is also worth opening a decent bottle of plonk with.
