An ice addict has admitted to breaking into two dorms at the Australian National University in a terrifying crime spree which culminated in a sex attack on a sleeping woman.

A dishevelled Paul David Kelly, 39, fronted the ACT Supreme Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to a string of charges stemming from a four-day crime spree, including trespass with intent, theft, possessing ice, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and committing an act of indecency without consent.

The two dorms where Kelly committed his most serious crimes, are among 18 at the university, and cannot be named for legal reasons.

Kelly, who sports distinct tattoos on his neck and arms, has been behind bars since his arrest in September last year when police recognised him from security camera footage at the Curtin shops where he was trying to buy three Toblerone chocolate bars and an iced coffee using a credit card he had made off with.

Kelly’s haul of stolen property at the university included four laptops, a university marquee and a trumpet from a music room, which he dropped during his getaway.

Documents previously tendered in court show Kelly, wearing a ski mask, made his way into a woman’s room as she slept in the early hours of the morning, where he began rubbing her breasts and, when she woke, said “You don’t know me”.

The woman, dazed, jumped out of bed screaming and began fighting off Kelly, who had by that stage was trying to unplug her laptop.

As he left, Kelly said: “I will rape you” and “I’m going to come back and get you”.

The woman raised the alarm with neighbours, prompting a series of frantic calls to triple-0.

Police arrived minutes later to find the distressed woman hyperventilating and crying.

DNA testing on a jacket Kelly had grabbed during his spree but left behind in the woman’s room confirmed his identity.

During his arrest, police found a clip seal bag with a small amount of meth.

Justice Michael Elkaim on Wednesday ordered Kelly to be assessed ahead of sentencing proceedings and remanded him in custody.

Sentencing dates are yet to be set down.
