An aspiring submariner has admitted she distributed a “revenge porn” video of another sailor using a sex toy during after being “publicly shamed” as a “psycho”.

Able Seaman Breanna Zorzetto, 22, pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing an intimate image without consent at the Defence Force Magistrates Court in Canberra on Thursday.

Zorzetto, a medic at HMAS Cerberus, southeast of Melbourne, admitted she sent the video of her victim using a vibrating butt plug to a friend, and later to a Facebook chat group of eight other sailors.

Neither the victim and the recipients can be identified for legal reasons.

The court heard Zorzetto joined the navy in 2017, and soon struck up a friendship with her victim.

She and the victim later began exchanging kinky, private videos, and in 2019 Zorzetto received a picture of the sailor having an orgasm with a butt plug in, and a message: “I was going to film me putting it in my arse but I don’t know if it’s hot or not”.

When the victim later referred to Zorzetto as a “psycho” on Snapchat, she sent the kinky video to a friend.

Almost a month later, during a group Facebook chat, Zorzetto was told her victim did not love her, that she was a “stalker”.

She responded by posting the masturbation video.

Defence Force Magistrate Commander Gregory Sirtes SC said the chat group was a “virtual star chamber” where members were scrutinising Zorzetto’s personal life and subjecting her to an unprompted “character assasination”.

The court heard the victim, who Zorzetto’s defence lawyer painted as spiteful, told her she had “f*cked up” and that it was going to “end her career”.

Prosecuting officer Major Cassandra Kanaley said Zorzetto’s offending was “not a careless act … it was done as revenge porn”.

“This type of offending is being seen more often in this courtroom, and the message needs to be sent that this offending is abhorrent to ADF values,” Major Kanaley said.

A string of sailors and officers vouched for Zorzetto’s good character, saying she was from a navy family, hoped to serve as a submarine medic, and had shown herself to be compassionate and professional while helping bushfire evacuees over summer.

Zorzetto’s defending officer, Captain John Tracey, said none of the people in the Facebook chat actually watched the video of the victim.

“The … distribution of that image was very limited, it was to a small group of individuals,” he said.

Commander Sirtes said Zorzetto’s conduct left “much to be desired” but said she was genuinely sorry, and that her victim had treated her “in a way that was ultimately undignified”.

“(But) I do not for a moment condone that conduct,” Commander Sirtes said.

Zorzetto was convicted, fined $1000 and demoted to the rank of Seaman.
