A sex addict actor whose most recent role was in the ABCs acclaimed political drama Total Control used stolen credit card details to pay for his sex romps with male prostitutes.
Kristian James Mynott, 42, on Tuesday faced the ACT Supreme Court and was sentenced to a two-year-and-five-month intensive corrections order after previously pleading guilty to six counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception and the unlawful possession of stolen property.
Court records show the part-time actor in 2017 stole credit card details from customers at Canberra Firewood Supplies in Fyshwick, where he worked, and used the details to pay for hotels, limousines and flights for interstate sex workers.
Mynott also used the stolen credit card details to pay for a premium subscription on gay sex app, Grindr, court records show.
Mynott gave one of the sex workers — who was working under the pseudonym ‘Dan Conn’ — the stolen credit card details so he could buy himself a “jazz lamb fur rug”, a pair of designer desk lamps and a replica Philippe Stark Louis Ghost armchair from a high end homewares store.
The sex worker told investigators Mynott led him to believe the credit card details were his own.
In total, Mynott’s fraud came to $11,449, although he paid cash for a $2000-a-session Sydney-based escort who took part in an overnight threesome with Mynott and a second male sex worker on June 10, 2017.
Prosecutors argued Mynott’s motivation was for “gratification of his sexual needs and fetishes”.
His barrister, Beth Morrisroe, told the court her client was “using sex as a means of boosting his mood”.
Among other purchases Mynott made with the stolen credit card details were underwear and takeaway pizza.
Mynott also pleaded guilty to possessing a Swarovski rose gold necklace, which was stolen from the mailboxes of his apartment building.
The actor falsely told police the necklace belonged to his girlfriend, whose first name was either “Sarah” or “Makayla”, but whose last name he could not remember.
Mynott was on a suspended sentence for theft and obtaining property by deception when he committed the first five credit card frauds.
His acting and modelling credits also include being the poster boy for Canberra’s public buses, and as “nudist number 5” in 2012 independent TV drama It’s not you, it’s Bree.
Justice Michael Elkaim said Mynott’s offending was a serious breach of trust.
He said Mynott had a long criminal history.
Mynott remains behind bars on separate charges, which he denies, but is expected to apply for bail on Wednesday.
