NRL star Bronson Xerri supported his brother in court on Wednesday as he pleaded not guilty to eight dangerous driving charges over a crash in which a mother died.
Troy Xerri, 29, was involved in a three-car collision that claimed the life of 63-year-old Jo’Anne Duke.
In a show of support the Cronulla Sharks player stood by his brother’s side as he faced Burwood Local Court for committal on Wednesday.
Troy Xerri was driving south along Blaxland Road in Eastwood after 5pm on November 13 2019 when his Toyota HiLux allegedly collided head-on with Mrs Duke’s grey Mazda 2.
Two other drivers, Edwina Roberts and Michael Nader, in separate cars were also injured as a result of the crash.
The Merrylands man was arrested on the night of the crash and charged with a raft of dangerous driving charges including dangerous driving occasioning death.
He was also charged with failing to maintain control of his car before it allegedly crossed to the wrong side of the road and harmed another driver, according to police documents.
Troy Xerri fronted court donning a white shirt and blue blazer as he pleaded not guilty through his lawyer Elias Khouzame to eight driving related charges; two of which were aggravated after police allege he was travelling “more than 45km/h” over the speed limit.
“My instruction is to enter pleas of not guilty,” Mr Khouzame told the court.
The family of Mrs Duke shook their heads and stormed out of the courtroom.
Outside court Troy Xerri refused to comment
He is on bail and will face Sydney District Court for trial in March.
