Latia Henderson, 18, and Kayley Ketley, 24, have been refused bail after appearing in Picton Local Court on Thursday, charged with kidnapping 24-year-old Nisha Phillips in her own car and wounding her.
The two women were stopped only after a passing motorist saw Ms Phillip’s hand dangling from the tail-light of her own Holden Commodore as they drove through the Southern Highlands about 11.30am on Wednesday and called Triple 0.
Police found Ms Phillips in the boot of the car suffering several stab wounds to her body.
Southern Highlands Police Detective Inspector Brendan Bernie said police would allege Ms Phillips picked up one of the women before heading to Claymore.
“The 24-year-old woman had stab wounds to the knee, thigh and forearm,” Dep-Insp Bernie said.
“She was fairly calm and able to assist police, so she held up remarkably well considering the trauma she’s been through.”
Police allege Ms Phillips was stabbed and put in the boot in Campbelltown before the women drove south along the Hume Highway.
It is believed the 24-year-old remained locked in the back of the car for a number of hours.
“The events that lead up to this occurred in the Campbelltown area and we’re getting assistance from Campbelltown detectives,” Det-Insp Bernie said.
All three women are from the Campbelltown area and are friends with each other on Facebook.
“The ladies knew each other and it appears as though at some stage in the early morning, she was forced into the boot of the car and she has allegedly been stabbed by one or more of these offenders,” he said.
“We understand that she’d been in the car for several hours before she was detected.“
The car has been seized by police.
Ms Phillips was meant to undergo surgery on Thursday for one of her stab wounds, but is in a stable condition in Liverpool hospital.
The motive for the crimes against Ms Phillips are still unclear, but police allege it was “personal violence related”.
“We have (allegedly) found a small quantity of illegal drugs in the vehicle which allegedly belongs to one of the ladies, but we don’t believe at this stage that that was the motive for the attack,” said Det Insp Bernie.
Ms Ketley has since been charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, take/detain in company with intent to get advantage occasioning actual bodily harm, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period and drug possession.
Ms Henderson was charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, take/detain in company with intent to get advantage occasion actual bodily harm, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner and a prior offence of never licensed person drive vehicle on road.
Although it is too early to determine how long the woman was in the car, Det Insp Bernie said she may have been put in the boot around daybreak on Wednesday.
“Early indications are that she’d been in the car since early morning, around daybreak,” said Det Insp Bernie.
Ms Henderson and Ms Ketley are in custody and are next due to appear at Campbelltown Local Court in April.
