What to do if you think a child is being abused

A young paramedic had his bail conditions altered for 32 alleged sexual abuse charges against a disabled child from 13 years ago.

The now 27-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday, after being charged for the matter in January this year and given strict bail conditions.

The Grabben Gullen resident was charged with five counts of incite aggravated indecency for a victim less than 16 with cognitive impairment, six counts of aggravated indecent assault (victim has cognitive impairment) and 21 counts of aggravated sexual intercourse for a person between 10 and 14 years.

According to the fact sheet tendered to the court, the man, who was 15 at the time, allegedly carried out the acts for almost seven months between April 21 and November 14, 2009.

Court documents state the incidents occurred when the disabled child was 11 and 12 years old.

Police allege during this period, the man grabbed the child’s penis to masturbate him, and allegedly forced him to have sex with him at Grabben Gullen, Crookwell and Surf Beach.

On Wednesday the court heard from the man’s lawyer that when the charges came to light at the end of 2019, he had been working as a paramedic in the UK, and was arrested in Sydney upon returning to Australia.

The court heard he is currently unemployed and resides with his parents on a farm near Crookwell.

Due to court orders, he is not allowed to leave the house without one of them present.

The man’s lawyer asked Magistrate Geraldine Beattie for a variation in bail conditions, which at the moment, doesn’t allow him to access the internet.

The lawyer argued that granting him access to the internet purely for banking and employment purposes would help him find a job and still protect the victim from being contacted.

Magistrate Beattie permitted the change in bail conditions.

The man is to continue reporting to the police station during the week and will appear at Goulburn Local Court for a charge certificate on May 11.
