Violence against women: Australia is facing an epidemic worse than terrorism

A Southern Highlands man has admitted to a string of violent offences after a holiday dispute turned extremely ugly.

Othon Castrisios, 47, appeared in Moss Vale Local Court after pleading guilty to assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of intimidation, and destruction of property.

The Mittagong resident was at a Greek Easter barbecue on May 2 with a large crowd of people, according to police facts. At around 6pm, court documents show most of the attendees headed home and Castrisios was left at the Mittagong house with three women.

The court heard when one of the women questioned his abilities as a father, Castrisios became enraged and threw a TV remote at her head. Police facts state he told the woman: “I wanna bash the f*** outta you” before the remote hit her.

The second woman then stood up and spoke about Castrisios being violent towards women, according to the court documents. The documents state he rushed at her, shoved her into the corner of the room and slapped her.

Police facts reveal Castrisios then turned back to the first woman, forced her to the ground, and sat astride her punching her in the head. The facts reveal the woman had a bleeding laceration and a chipped tooth as a result.

The agreed facts state the second woman tried to intervene, but Castrisios forced her to the ground and dragged her by the hair to the hallway, yelling at her to leave. The facts show the a third woman was able to separate them, and the two women went to collect their belongings while the third woman stood guard.

The two women went to the hospital to treat their injuries but Castrisios continued to text them to collect their stuff from the house, according to court documents. The documents reveal Castrisios’s texts were threatening, stating he’d “nearly killed” one of the women.

When he was sent photos of the women’s injuries, police facts show Castrisios’s response was scathing.

“You’re a nasty liar and the most dramatic thing that breaths (sic) f*** off out of my existence you evil fake thing,” he texted.

When the women returned to the house to collect their things, police facts show Castrisios was aggressive and grabbed a baseball bat, which he raised above his head and swung as if to hit their vehicle.

The next day when police visited the house, they saw smashed glass pots which had belonged to one of the women. According to police facts, Castrisios saw the cops coming and jumped over a fence and ran. However, police caught up with him and put him in the paddy wagon.

Castrisios’s lawyer Michael Doughty told the court his client had been in “an emotional state” at the holiday celebration, but said he wouldn’t minimise the severity of his client’s offences.

“He’s had a long term drug problem,” he said.

“He recognises his addiction is selfish behaviour and it doesn’t just impact him, it impacts everyone around him.”

Mr Doughty said Castrisios had been seeking treatment for his addiction.

The police prosecutor told the court he believes a jail sentence would be appropriate, given the charges involved multiple offences to multiple victims over a prolonged period.

“Community safety is paramount in this case,” he said.

Castrisios will be sentenced when he returns to court in August.
