A local man recently charged with defrauding a Covid support scheme will head to trial to fight the charge of stabbing a 22-year-old in the back three times during a Moss Vale brawl last year.

Bryce Dean Moloney, 22, appeared in Moss Vale Court on Monday after being charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possessing a prohibited drug, not complying with a noticed direction and dishonestly gaining financial advantage by deception.

On August 6, police allege the Mittagong resident stabbed a 22-year-old man three times in his back during a brawl on a quiet residential street in Moss Vale.

Police allege Mr Moloney failed to comply with public health orders when he visited two homes in Moss Vale to drink with several people.

Police claim Mr Moloney stabbed the man about 8pm after illegally socialising in Moss Vale during the regional Covid lockdown. Mr Moloney allegedly lunged at the man’s chest, grabbed him and used a knife to stab him three times in the back.

Emergency services were called to Parkes Rd, Moss Vale about 8.10pm after they received reports of a brawl. They found the man suffering stab wounds to the back and treated the alleged victim at the scene.

The alleged victim was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition to receive urgent treatment, but he has since been discharged from the hospital.

Detectives established a Strike Force Briwood to investigate the alleged stabbing and their inquiries culminated in Mr Moloney’s arrest at a Goulburn motel on October 14 at 2.30pm.

Police allege they uncovered 0.38 grams of methamphetamine in Mr Moloney’s possession when they searched him during the arrest.

Documents tendered to the court show Mr Moloney was recently released from prison for similarly violent offences.

The court heard the Director of Public Prosecutions will prosecute the matter, which has been committed for trial to the District Court.

Moss Vale Court heard Mr Moloney is also charged with defrauding a government support scheme intended to help residents financially affected by the pandemic, which he allegedly did only two months after he was charged with his alleged involvement in the violent brawl.

In the first two weeks of October last year, police allege Mr Moloney defrauded the NSW Business Covid Payment scheme in order to dishonestly obtain $10,500.

Mr Moloney has not entered pleas to any of the charges before the court.

The court heard Mr Moloney will remain behind bars on remand at least until his next appearance on May 3.

He will appear in Moss Vale Court on that day for the charges of defying a Covid direction, possessing prohibited drugs, and fraud.

The alleged stabbing incident is due to be heard at District Court in Sydney Downing Centre on May 11.
