After 12 months of construction, a dilapidated overbridge in the Southern Highlands has been replaced, signalling the opening of an important road and marking the completion of safety upgrades in the area.

As of Monday, the long-awaited new $7.4 million Range Road Overbridge has been completed, which now opens up Colo Street in Mittagong.

Member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith, said both the overbridge and new side road have opened to traffic, returning road access to drivers and pedestrians.

“The former bridge which was nearing the end of its lifespan and was costing a lot to maintain has been replaced by a new concrete and steel structure, which will serve the community for many years to come,” Mr Smith said.

“The new bridge provides improved safety for all customers with a better road surface, new safety barriers and a new separated shared pathway across the railway.”

The NSW Government provided $6.2 million of funding to the bridge replacement project under Transport for NSW’s Country Regional Network Operations & Maintenance budget, and the Australian Government committed close to $1.2 million towards the new bridge under the Bridge Renewal Program.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the NSW Government’s economic management meant there was more money to spend on projects like the Range Road Overbridge that now has load limits for heavy vehicles removed.

“The former longstanding load limit has also been removed for vehicles providing improved heavy vehicle access to and from Mittagong,” Mr Farraway said.

“This will reduce congestion, provide greater access to heavy vehicles, which will ultimately improve the supply chain network.

In addition to the bridge replacement, significant associated drainage and roadworks including work to build a new roundabout at the intersection of Colo Street, Range Road and Railway Parade, has been carried out to improve the safety of road users, particularly at the intersection of Colo Street and Range Road.

This additional work was carried out by Transport for NSW with funding from the NSW Government and Wingecarribee Shire Council.

“The NSW Government is securing a brighter future for NSW families by delivering projects that improve safety and efficiency for motorists out on our network,” Mr Farraway said.
