A young man who is serving time for killing a sex worker in Sydney has been sentenced for assaulting an officer at Goulburn Correctional Centre.
Mert Ney, 23, appeared for his matter via audiovisual link at Goulburn Local Court on Tuesday, having previously pleaded guilty to assaulting a correctives officer who was in the execution of his duty.
Ney is currently serving a lengthy jail sentence for fatally stabbing sex worker Michaela Dunn, 24, at a Sydney apartment in 2019, after booking an appointment with her.
According to the facts provided to the court, on the afternoon of October 15, 2021, he was outside his cell in the high risk management unit (Goulburn Supermax) with two corrective officers, after there were reports of a minor fire in the cell.
He was searched and no items were found.
Documents state that when the victim arrived, he and the two other officers escorted Ney to the high risk management unit clinic to observe him for smoke inhalation, and it was there where he lunged for one of the officers, still handcuffed.
After being restrained, facts state he was seated on a bed, and became agitated and abusive towards clinic staff.
He was then placed lying down on the bed, with the victim standing close by.
According to the facts he then turned his head towards the correctives officer and spat directly into his face.
Facts show the officer had no time to react as it was happening, and immediately cleaned the spit from his eyes, nose, mouth and cheeks.
After, Ney was further restrained by correctives and escorted to an observation cell, while continuing to be abusive and aggressive to staff.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie sentenced him to additional jail time, adding 15 months to a 44 year sentence, with 33 years non parole.
He will be eligible for release on February 12, 2053, at 56 years-old.
