Shocking footage has emerged of the sickening moment a man slugged another in the face, knocking him to the ground “like a rag doll” after a night out.

Unprovoked king hit on Bowral's main street

Shocking CCTV has emerged of a one-punch attack in Bowral’s Bong Bong Street.

On October 10, a drunk Kurtis McShane, 20, called out to the victim from across the street to ask his name.

When the victim stopped to turn and reply, McShane walked up to him and coward punched him in the face. The video shows the victim falling straight back and hitting his head on the pavement.

The victim was unconscious for a short time while his friends tried to prop him up on a nearby bench. According to a witness, he was limp “like a rag doll” and had blood all over his face.

McShane, 20, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and recklessly destroying property in Moss Vale Local Court on Tuesday.

Police prosecutor Peter Robinson said one-punch attacks should not be tolerated.

“The community is sick to death of these kinds of offences,” he said.

Magistrate Mark Douglass agreed the unprovoked and violent nature of the attack warranted a strong sentence.

“It was a punch that was premeditated. He was totally unprepared,” Magistrate Douglass said.

“The prevalence of this kind of offending is of serious consideration to the court.”

McShane’s lawyer argued his client had a very difficult upbringing and struggled to avoid peer pressure.

“Mr McShane’s difficulty is in avoiding negative influences,” he said.

According to court documents, McShane sent a Facebook message to the victim the day after the assault, blaming his behaviour on alcohol.

“I drunk a whole case of Bundy rum and I don’t normally drink it for this reason. I’m sorry,” he said.

McShane’s lawyer argued his client had committed to sobriety and making amends.

“His abstinence from alcohol and attempts at rehabilitation are commendable for someone his age,” he said.

Magistrate Douglass accepted the argument McShane’s susceptible nature might be pushed further towards criminal behaviour if he was imprisoned. Instead, he imposed a jail sentence to be served in the community in the form of a nine-month intensive corrections order.

McShane was also ordered to participate in anger management and have mental health assessment and treatment as directed.

At the same time, McShane was convicted of recklessly destroying the wall light of an East Bowral pub on September 18, 2020, when he was drunk. He was fined $500 and ordered to repay the $250 cost of the light.
