A young couple claim they were “peer pressured” into doing burnouts outside the Robertson Pie Shop.
Jade Carroll and her boyfriend Hayden Harpley, both 20, faced Moss Vale Local Court on Tuesday after participating in a prearranged hoon event near Roberston on October 23.
Carroll pleaded guilty to driving recklessly in a dangerous manner after CCTV showed her as the driver of the white Holden Commodore sedan that performed three significant burnouts.
Over 100 vehicles and a huge crowd of people were present when the car narrowly avoided hitting spectators during two of the turns and actually hit a parked 4WD on the third, forcibly moving the truck 5-10m sideways.
Spectators were seen fleeing the stationary vehicle.
When stopped by police with no bonnet on the vehicle, Carroll said she’d been the victim of an accident.
“Some guy in a 4WD drive backed into me,” she said.
Later she admitted to her role in the collision.
“The road was wet, the brakes locked up, and I slid on the grass down a hill at no more than 5km/hr,” Carroll told police.
Her boyfriend Harpley pleaded guilty with participating in the hooning after admitting that he was a passenger at the time of the burnouts.
“We went for a drive and we ended up at Robertson. Jade was driving, and she got peer pressured into doing a burnout,” Harpley said in a statement.
The couple have documented their interest in cars and hoon activities on Facebook, with one photo showing the two in a car drifting on the bitumen with smoke trailing behind.
Carroll acknowledged the potential risk of serious injury to the spectators and the other road users.
The pair will appear in Wollongong Local Court for sentencing on 2 February 2021.
