NSW Ambulance were called to the Hume Highway near Sutton Forest before noon following reports of a multiple vehicle crash.

A spokesperson from the Southern Highlands Rural Fire Service confirmed a ten tonne truck had collided with the rear of a semi-trailer.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Liam Ryan said the men were both seriously injured in the crash.

“One patient suffered chest injuries, while the other was prepared for transport for a suspected spinal injury,” he said.

The two men are now in a serious but stable condition.

Four paramedic crews and two ambulance helicopters attended the scene for more than three hours.

“We’ve mobilised lots of emergency services resources for what is a very serious accident,” Inspector Ryan said.

“The outcome here could easily have been even worse.”

Despite social media reports one of the trucks was alight, the Rural Fire Service spokesman confirmed there were no active fires at the scene.

“There may have been a small fire but the RFS crews got on scene and worked with fire rescue crews, police and ambulance (to contain the situation),” he said.

The accident occurred on the Hume Highway approaching the Illawarra Highway, just past the turn-off to Hanging Rock Rd.

The northbound lane of the Hume Highway was closed and traffic reports revealed a long queue of traffic was backed up for 5km behind the accident.

However, the spokesman for the Rural Fire Services confirmed the road is now clear of debris and the northbound lane is open.
