Spirits were high at Goulburn’s highly-anticipated Steampunk Victoriana Fair this weekend following a two year Covid hiatus, with hundreds of fans from regional NSW, Sydney, Canberra, and beyond, turning up in creative costumes.
Following the industrial revolution in the 19th-century, steampunk was discovered as a subgenre of science fiction which incorporates retro-futuristic technology and aesthetics inspired by industrial steam-powered machinery.
Now the aesthetic is celebrated in film, music, design, video games, fashion and at unique fairs like this.
Event creator and co-organiser Julianne Salway said she started the only NSW-wide fair in 2014 because she was fascinated with the genre.
“I became fascinated with the steampunk era and sought new ways to get a different audience such as young families to visit the Goulburn Waterworks,” she said.
The Victorian-Georgian style Waterworks museum happens to contain one of the only Appleby steam engines left in the world. It is also the only steam engine in Australia which is still functional and in its original location.
On the weekend, event goers arrived via horse carriage among other forms of transportation, and were greeted by steam, live music, markets, food stalls and activities for both adults and kids.
For some it was just an opportunity to picnic at the Wollondilly River with the sun on their backs, and for others a reason to step into the 19th century in corset dresses, tailcoats, gears with top hats and goggles.
“We were really pleased with the fair and blessed with good weather,” Ms Salway said.
