Goulburn is hosting the annual Football NSW Country Cup, giving young players the opportunity to experience tournament.
The tournament will be hosted by the Southern Tablelands Football Association at Cookbundoon Sporting Fields from Saturday to Monday, starting nice and early tomorrow at 8.30am.
Football manager Craig Norris said he was looking forward to the cup and was grateful for the opportunity.
“We’re pretty excited and are working pretty hard there on the grounds at the moment,” Mr Norris said.
Hosting the tournament has only now become available due to an upgrade in amenities at the $572,884 Graham Coe Pavilion, which was completed last year.
It include six changerooms, a function room, officials’ changerooms and public amenities.
“Having the new facilities has made it possible,” Mr Norris said.
“Previously we’ve had good field space but never any shelter or proper facilities to host the amount of teams were hosting now and to keep them warm and dry.”
The sporting field will be hosting both under 14s and 16s girls’ local red team players, while other teams will be travelling to the Riverina, Southern and Western Branches.
The under 12s boys will be heading to Nowra, under 15s boys to Broulee and under 12s girls in Bathurst.
Mr Norris spoke of what this opportunity meant to the young girl players.
“It’ll be pretty exciting for them to play in front of their family and friends,” Mr Norris said.
“For the girls, both their tournaments were cancelled in October last year due to Covid, so some of them have never played in front of so many people or experienced a country cup.”
Mr Norris said he hoped the weather would be okay this weekend and that the winds have been “a bit of a blessing this week because they've been drying out the ground a bit.”
“If the winds could stop tomorrow, that would be nice,” he said.
