Australians want to seize ‘opportunity’ to improve work-life balance

The highly anticipated Cafe 5911 has opened its doors to the Goulburn community and is all about celebrating the farming community and paying tribute to the owner’s history.

After more than two months of hard work, owner Vishal Oberoi, his wife and the rest of the team eagerly welcomed everyone, serving coffee with locally-roasted coffee beans, sliders and dessert as the state emerges from Covid lockdowns.

Mr Oberoi, who is originally from Pathankot, the Punjab state of India, named Cafe 5911 after the model of his father’s tractor from their farm in India, which he used to drive around as a kid.

Family friend Bob Flanagan said the name was “in recognition of his father and his early life.”

The whole cafe is decorated in history, with farming memorabilia such as the front of a tractor from a Goulburn auction placed on a wall, as well as small tractors from India sitting on shelves, which are impressively made out of rubber thongs.

“The cafe is a tribute to the farming community and everything is associated with Goulburn - even the coffee is named Merino,” Mr Flanagan said.

Mr Oberoi has lived in Australia for eight years, having studied a Masters in IT in Melbourne and then working in the food industry in managerial positions.

He has moved within NSW quite a lot, before settling in Goulburn two years ago, which he has adopted as his home town.

“It’s always been his dream to own a cafe,” Bob’s wife Wendy Flanagan said.

When making a speech during the opening, Mr Oberoi said: “We will greet you like our family, that’s our promise.”

Goulburn state Liberal MP Wendy Tuckerman, who attended the opening, said: “I think its an absolutely fantastic opportunity, especially at such a great location, and I’m sure the Goulburn community will praise you.

“It’s been a very difficult time for small businesses as we know and I think now everyone is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Cafe 5911 is located at 10 Montague St, Goulburn, next to the Goulburn Courthouse.
