In honour of International Burger Day, we asked where to find the best burger in the Southern Highlands – and the answer was resounding. Boozy Burgers at Eden Brewery is the food truck that’s won heart and stomachs all over the Shire.
Boozy Burgers was the first food truck in the Southern Highlands when it opened in September last year. It was started by Eden Brewery owner Jacob Newman and former Press Shop chef Nathan West, who combined their love of food and beer into the innovative Boozy Burgers.
“The reason it’s called Boozy Burgers is every item has our beer in it,” Mr Newman said.
“The pickles are made in a vinegar we made from our beer, bacon is brined in our beer, and the sauces have beer in them.”
It’s the perfect combination for a food truck parked on the property of Mittagong’s Eden Brewery. Mr West said they wanted to stand out from the crowd and provide the Southern Highlands with a casual and delicious culinary experience.
“We didn’t want to be driving down the same street all the other burger joints were driving down,” he said.
“We’re cheap, cheerful, delicious, and trying to support local businesses.”
Boozy Burgers source all of the produce locally and get their hand-picked special blend patties from Maugers Meats in Burrawang. Mr West said the butcher is shocked at how often they need to replenish their supplies.”
“We’ve taken half the population of the cows in Robertson,” he laughed.
The owners estimate Boozy Burgers sells a thousand burgers a week, which is quite a feat for a food truck. Mr West said it’s been busy ever since they opened for business.
“We were pretty successful when we first opened up and it’s been a freight train since we opened,” he said.
“We just tried to give the community something that they wanted.”
The food truck is inspired by traditional American burgers, which complements the American beer produced at Eden Brewery. Each weekend there is a new special burger on the menu which “tips the cap to American regional burgers”, according to Mr West. Since they’ve opened, Mr West hasn’t repeated a single special and said he has many more ideas to come.
If that’s not enough burger creativity, Mr Newman revealed there is actually an entire menu known only to the regular burgerholics.
“We have a whole menu that’s not on the menu,” he said.
“You have to be in the know to know.”
(You’re welcome.)
Mr Newman and Mr West said the aim of Boozy Burgers was to create something special for the Southern Highlands.
“We’re trying to be a part of the community, support the community, and give the community something really good,” Mr West said.
They have an eye on potentially expanding to other breweries or even festivals in the future, as their unique ordering system simplifies the process for everyone involved. With Boozy Burgers, you order at the Eden Brewery bar and then get a text when your burger is ready. You can wait inside with a drink by the fire instead of standing in the cold. Mr West said it’s been a game changer.
“Once the locals got used to giving their number and sitting down to relax, they can do nothing but enjoy themselves,” he said.
Boozy Burgers will be selling their OG burger for $10 all day to celebrate International Burger Day.
