A Bargo man has been charged with 22 offences, ranging from assault to gun offences, after police allegedly found a stash of guns at his home.

The matter of Alan James Cobill, 24, was heard at Picton Court on Tuesday after he was charged with a shopping list of offences ranging from assault to possession of six illegal guns.

Police allege the Bargo resident intimidated a woman on August 30 last year with the intention of causing her harm, and assaulted her on the same day.

Less than two months later on October 11, police claim Mr Cobill intimidated the same woman and two men and intended to cause them fear.

According to police allegations, officers found a large stash of illegal firearms at Mr Cobill’s Bargo home three days later on October 14.

Police allege they found eight guns including a gel blaster resembling a military assault rifle, a silver imitation pistol, a bolt action rifle air gun, an imitation black pistol, and a Luger-style pistol.

Police also claim to have seized detachable firearm magazines and ammunition for firearms for which Mr Cobill does not have a permit. Police allege, in addition to possessing illegal firearms, the young man did not take reasonable precautions to keep them safely and ensure the protection of the community.

The court heard the numerous discussions between Mr Cobill’s lawyer and the prosecution have been very productive and an agreement is likely to be reached within days.

Defence lawyer John Stonham told the court he would recommend his client accept the prosecution offer, which would result in the withdrawal of four charges relating to the possession of illegal firearms.

Despite not having formally entered pleas, Mr Stonham told the court Mr Cobill has already met with a psychologist in preparation for the impending finalisation of the matter. The court heard Mr Cobill’s charges will remain in the Local Court.

Mr Cobill will return to Picton Court on January 21, 2022.
