Bowral-based company Southern Waste Recycling Solutions is looking to build a $5 million facility in the industrial zone at 15 Carribee Street in Moss Vale. The facility would be constructed on the 10 hectare block in the Moss Vale Enterprise Zone between Moss Vale and Berrima.

The waste management facility would import over 200,000 tonnes of waste annually from hydro-excavation and drilling muds, virgin excavated natural minerals, and stormwater. Moss Vale has been chosen as the site for its proximity to Wollongong, Sydney, and Canberra, where the waste would be picked up and imported to Moss Vale.

At the facility, the treated waste would be separated into water, sand, aggregate, biosludge, and low-grade refined hydrocarbon products.

These products are expected to generate between $25 million and $50 million revenue through disposal and sales of recovered resources.

Chairman of the Southern Highlands Chamber of Commerce, Steve Horton, said the chamber welcomed the environmentally sustainable business.

“At the moment we’re paying big dollars to take waste away, so if they come in here and manage it, that’s great,” he said.

Southern Waste Recycling Solutions currently offers waste disposal services and is looking to offer treatment and recovery to minimise the amount of waste-clogging landfills.

The facility would operate 24 hours a day on weekdays and on Saturday mornings, and would employ 15 staff.

Mr Horton noted employment for 15 staff would create much-needed career diversity in the area.

“From our perspective, anything that’s coming into the area and offering jobs to people is an excellent opportunity,” he said.

The development was first proposed in June 2019 and a development application has not been lodged with the Department of Planning, Industry, and Environment yet.

According to a department spokesperson, the application is currently in the process of preparing an Environmental Impact Statement.
