The Goulburn community and surrounds could be offered a new wellness service that they don’t have to travel for to Canberra or Bowral, thanks to a new businesswoman in town.
Remedial massage and beauty therapist Chelsea Unwin has secured a place for her business, Results Float and Wellness Centre, at 34 Clifford Street, Goulburn, which is yet to be approved by council.
Ms Unwin moved to Goulburn from the Gold Coast with her sons just before Christmas last year.
She started doing remedial massage and facials from home and as her clientele built up, the decision to expand and offer the unique service of a sensory deprivation water tank became clear as day.
“It’s always been a goal of mine to open up my own float tank business,” Ms Unwin said.
She spoke of the benefits of float therapy and a bit about how it works.
“It’s great for mental health, physical health, people that have chronic pain, people with depression, anxiety,” Ms Unwin said.
“You go into the sensory deprivation water tank, which is soundproofed, and you get taken away from all the outside elements.
“There’s no music, it’s dark, it’s just gives your body that time to completely relax.
“There’s a lot of epsom salt in the tank, so your body automatically floats to the top of the water.”
She also spoke of the benefits for pregnant women.
“It’s great for pregnancy, because you feel weightless, which you don’t get very often when you’re pregnant,” Ms Unwin said.
Having suffered from postnatal depression, she said having an option of “natural therapy” like this really helped her.
“I suffer from depression myself – I had postnatal depression after my third son. I’m also a busy mum. So I know what it’s like to want to have something available that’s not just taking a tablet or having to go to the doctor all the time,” Ms Unwin said.
She also spoke of the unique opportunity it could provide the community of Goulburn and surrounds.
“I think it’s good for the whole community,” Ms Unwin said.
“There’s a lot of elderly people in Goulburn, who might have chronic pain or osteo, or other conditions they’re trying to manage.
“And then there’s the younger generation, people that exercise a lot or are very busy with work or have kids.”
President for Goulburn Chamber of Commerce, Darrell Weekes, said the wellness centre was a “great opportunity to provide services that aren’t available here.”
“We are very happy when new businesses open in Goulburn,” Mr Weekes said.
“I suspect it will be well received,” Mr Weekes said.
“Anything that can particularly help with mental health and alleviating stress is a fantastic thing.”
Ms Unwin is looking forward to her venture and is hoping to have her development application approved by Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
“Everything's ready to go. I’m just waiting to get that final paperwork and approval from the council,” Ms Unwin said.
“All of my clients are very excited and are waiting for things to open.”
She is currently doing a ‘pre-opening special,’ offering $50 float vouchers.
She hopes to eventually have an infrared sauna at her centre as well and continue to expand.
“The idea for me is to be able to offer a local service where people can access a combination of wellness services all in one place,” Ms Unwin said.
“This allows clients to follow a treatment plan of recovery and maintenance, using all the facilities with one another.”
