Police found the man with serious injuries to his head and face and he was rushed to Liverpool Hospital where he remains in an induced coma.

Camden Police Area Command Command established a crime scene and started investigating.

A small blue hatchback was seen arriving and leaving the scene during the alleged assault with police releasing CCTV imagery of the vehicle on Thursday.

Police were told the vehicle was seen in the Tahmoor area at the time of the alleged assault.

The vehicle was later found burnt out by police and seized for forensic examination.

Camden Police crime manager, Detective Inspector Simon Day, said investigators believed multiple people were involved.

“Detectives are still looking into the exact location/s of where the assault took place, however, the victim was located in the vicinity of the Baptist Church,” he said.

“It is possible that the assault occurred elsewhere.

“Detectives investigating the matter believe there was more than one person involved in the assault.”

“Detectives are still investigating the reason why he was in the area and are making inquiries into where he was and who he was with in the hours preceding him being located.

“We would appeal to the public to contact police or Crime Stoppers if they have further CCTV footage, dashcam or mobile phone footage of the incident or the area in the late hours of Sunday, December 26 to the early hours of Monday, December 27.”
